NHTSA Wisconsin State Patrol To Do Joint Inspection Of Alleged Runaway Toyota Camry

Its been almost two weeks since 76-year old Myrna Marsellie said her 2009 Toyota Camry accelerated on its own, crashing into the Sheboygan Falls YMCA.

So what happened? We dont know yet.

Sheboygan Falls Police Chief Steven Riffel tells me the car is still in his departments custody and there will be a joint NHTSA/Wisconsin State Patrol inspection of the vehicle and search of the cars databases sometime this week.

The department is also in the process of enhancing surveillance video (the police station is across the parking lot from the YMCA and its cameras are thought to have captured the crash).

What about Toyota, which usually gets inspectors on these things quickly (given that most cases of unintended acceleration upon investigation are proven to be driver error...standing on the gas instead of the brake)?

Well, the chief says Toyotas asking, but hes got a search warrant...and he doesnt want too many folks inside the vehicle. NHTSA and the state patrol get first dibs. And he tells me hell be looking for NHTSAs input as to whether to release the vehicle to Toyota for its inspection, or back to Myrna.

NHTSA, of course, is the agency alleging that Toyota hid dangerous defects and should pay record fines.

This is not Toyotas week for catching a break, it seems.

New Car Review 2013 Nissan Altima 2 5 SL

2013 Nissan Altima in black against white background
The 2013 Nissan Altima.

This is, by all accounts, a watershed year for the family sedan. Theres a new Ford Fusion, a new Chevy Malibu, a new Honda Accord, and a new Mazda 6.

Havent driven any of them yet (Malibu and Accord are due at TireKicker World Headquarters soon).

Sure hope they brought their A game, though. Because theres also a new Nissan Altima. And.......damn (let Will Smith sue).

Now, regular TireKicker readers will recall that weve always thought the Altima was a better car than its sales figures (which arent bad) indicated.

But this.....

Lets get to the important stuff. The price has gone up. A 2.5 SL now has a base price of $28,050. The one we drove a shade over a year ago was $5,590 less. But the gas mileage has positively pole-vaulted. The old ones EPA estimate for city driving was 22. The 13 shows 27. The highway estimate jumps from 32 to 38...and although people are suing other carmakers for inflated mileage figures, our week in the Altima says those numbers are absolutely achievable.

The money didnt all go to fuel economy. The 2.5 SL is now an extremely well-equipped machine. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, active understeer control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, vehicle dynamic control, tire pressure monitoring, electronic brake force distribution, a vehicle security system, fog lights, LED taillights, heated outside mirrors and exhaust finishers.

True story: We had people look at us and say "Nice car".  That usually happens tens of thousands of dollars up the ladder. But the new styling resonates with people (whichever car mag said it looked like a Camry stung by bees needs to have its eyes checked)...and it looks especially rich in dark colors, like the Metallic Slate ours was wearing.

The 2013 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL interior.

The bigger base price buys you a nicer environment in which to do your driving, too. The interior is a huge leap from last years, with Advance Drive-Assist display, 8-way power drivers seat, heated front seats, leather appointed seats, premium interior trim, a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, a 9-speaker BOSE premium audio system, a 5-inch color display, USB, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, dual-zone climate control, rear seat A/C vents and a moonroof.

Again, all standard. Which makes that $28,050 seem like the bargain it is.

Options? our car had two...floor and trunk mats for $165 and the Technology Package (replacing the 5-inch color display with a 7-inch featuring navigation, blind spot warning, lane departure warning and moving object detection for $1,090. With $790 destination charges, the Altima rang in at $30,105.

It drives well, looks good, has all the creature comforts, just hits $30K and gets 27 in town and 38 on the highway.  Until and unless the other new family sedans can top it, theres a new favorite family sedan down TireKicker way.

Toyota Stops Sales Of Lexus GX 460

Lexus GX 460s will stay on dealer lots while Toyota figures out if theres merit to Consumer Reports  assessment of the SUV as a safety risk and what to do about it. In a news release, Toyota said:

"For more than 20 years, Lexus has made customer safety and satisfaction our highest priorities. We are taking the situation with the GX 460 very seriously and are determined to identify and correct the issue Consumer Reports identified. At this time we have asked our dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the 2010 GX 460.

Lexus’ extensive vehicle testing provides a good indication of how our vehicles perform and we are confident that the GX meets our high safety standards. Our engineering teams are vigorously testing the GX using Consumer Reports’ specific parameters to identify how we can make the GX’s performance even better.

For any customer who has purchased a 2010 GX 460 and is concerned about driving their vehicle, we will provide a loaner car until a remedy is available.

As always, Lexus is committed to providing our customers with outstanding products and service.

Customers who have any questions or concerns should contact Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25 LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987."

Consumer Reports says the recently redesigned SUV gets sideways in emergency handling maneuvers, with the electronic stability control kicking in too late, creating a rollover risk. Heres video of their test:

Water in the trunk

If you have found in the trunk of his car water or dust, you should do next. First, check the trunk lid: not whether it is biased and whether the strain on it. If the lid is biased - it will need to be adjusted, if deformed - otrihtovat. To adjust the trunk lid, you must use a special oval-shaped hole in the doorway. As a result, regulation of the trunk lid or straightening it should be freely opened and closed. If water or dust get into your trunk because of problems with sealing rubber cap, the seal must be replaced. If you repaired the trunk lid, it should be carefully inspected and, if necessary, sealing all the places through which the trunk may get water or dust.

Related            High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (an AM General military vehicle)

The Hummer H1 is a civilian off-road vehicle based on the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (or Humvee), which was created by AM General. The vehicle was produced from 1992 through 2006, and was the first of what became the Hummer line. It was initially known only as the "Hummer"; however, in 1999 in a joint venture between General Motors and AM General, GM began marketing the Hummer H2, which was built on the Chevrolet Tahoe chassis. It was at this point that the original Hummer was given the H1 designation. For collectors, the most desirable model is the H1 Alpha, produced in the final model year of 2006. It had the most powerful engine and the best fuel mileage of the H1 vehicles. Overall, the H1 was a very limited production vehicle.

The basic Hummer vehicle is 6 feet tall, 7 feet wide, 15 feet long and weighs 5,200 pounds (2,340 kilograms). AM General used a steel frame with five cross members to support the weight of a vehicle with a payload of up to 2,500 pounds (1,125 kilograms), allowing a gross vehicle weight (GVW) the weight of the vehicle, passengers and maximum payload of 7,700 pounds (3,465 kilograms). In order to keep the vehicles total weight at a manageable level, AM General used aluminium to construct the body of the car. The aluminium is strong enough to support heavy armaments or carry troops, yet is able to flex when the Hummer travels over rough ground.
A double A-arm independent suspension in the front and rear with hydraulic shock absorbers allow the Hummer to tackle unforgiving terrain. It also has torque-biasing differentials and four-wheel disc brakes, which give the Hummer the ability to continue moving even when some of the wheels lose contact with the ground.

The Hummer is a fully four-wheel drive vehicle the engine powers all four wheels at all times. It also has open-differential gears with Torsen differentials. When one wheel begins to slip, it loses torque. The Torsen differential system senses the loss of torque and increases torque to the other wheels. Coupled with the brake traction control system, the Humvees Torsen differentials give the vehicle incredible off-road capabilities.

Hummers have a 25-gallon (95-liter) fuel tank and can go about 300 miles (480 kilometers) before needing to refuel -- meaning a basic Hummer gets about 12 miles to the gallon, though heavier Hummer variations are somewhat less efficient. As per the Armys request, all military Hummers run on diesel fuel and have an automatic transmission the Army wanted all its vehicles to run on the same fuel system and felt that automatic transmissions would be easier for new trainees to learn quickly.

The Hummer has power steering and includes a 12/24-volt electrical  system. Either two or four soldiers can sit inside the cab of the vehicle, depending on the variant. According to AM General, the location of the seats on either side of the drive train helps give the Hummer a low center of gravity.

The vehicles have powerful combat locks on each of the doors to help keep soldiers safe. Unfortunately, some soldiers have found it impossible to open the doors if the locks are damaged out in the field. To fix this problem, AM General now includes a D-ring on all Hummer doors. The D-ring is a loop of metal attached to the outside of the Hummers doors and functions as a place to attach a cable or chain. A winch or similar device can pull the cable, forcing the door open and letting soldiers out of the vehicle.

Thats the lowdown on the basic Hummer. Using this as a starting platform, AM General produced 15 different HMMWV variants. They designed 44 interchangeable Hummer parts, allowing the Army to modify, maintain and repair vehicles with incredible efficiency, economy and flexibility.

Malaysian Grand Prix 2011 Leading Position Sebastian Vessel is the fastest Leading position after qualifying

Beating Hamilton into second place by a mere 0.104 seconds means the top five on the grid tomorrow are the same five which started the Australian Grand Prix and in exactly the same order with Mark in P3, then Button and Alonso.
We used our Kers system on both cars this weekend and, as Sebastian said, it turned out to be a necessity. He said: “Big compliments to the guys in the team – especially those working with Kers, they did a lot of work since Australia. If we wouldn’t have had it today, neither me nor Mark would be sitting here now, so compliments to the guys.”
Webber himself saw an improvement since we left Albert Park.
He said: “It was a better performance from me today compared to Melbourne and I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I’m starting on the clean side of the grid and it should be an interesting race – there will be a lot of pit stops.”
Today was a closer battle with Hamilton and Button McLaren, as our team principal explained: “To get first and third on the grid after a fascinating qualifying session, which was really tight with the McLarens today, is a great start to the weekend,” said Christian. “On the final run and under huge pressure, Sebastian delivered just enough to get pole. Mark also improved his time and for the team to take P1 and P3, sets us up well for tomorrow.”
Both Renaults again looked strong, but for the second time this season, Michael Schumacher failed to make the cut for Q3, while his team-mate did. Neither of the drivers in Scuderia Toro Rosso made it through to final ten, Sébastien Buemi having the more dramatic outing in the second period when a piece of sidepod bodywork flew off the side of his STR6 causing the session to be briefly red-flagged.
The good news at the bottom of the screen was that HRT made the 107% cut-off point and so both Tonio Liuzzi and Narain Karthikeyan will start a grand prix tomorrow for the first time in 2011.
So… the rain held off (for the second day running) and we’ve yet to get the Pirelli wets out of their warmers. But who knows how things will fare tomorrow. We’re forecast thunder and showers.
